Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is an upcoming turn-based tactical role-playing video game developed by Ubisoft Milan and published by Ubisoft for the Nintendo Switch. The game is a crossover between Nintendo's Mario and Ubisoft's Raving Rabbids franchises, and a sequel to the 2017 game Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. It is set for a release in 2022.

Plot [edit]

An entity named Cursa has been seeking out the energy of the titular Sparks, creatures formed by the fusion of Lumas and Rabbids, and while doing so has plunged the galaxy into chaos. Mario and his friends must travel to different worlds to restore peace to the galaxy, save the Sparks, and defeat Cursa.[1]

Gameplay [edit]

Gameplay in Sparks of Hope is largely similar to that of Kingdom Battle. Players are able to build out their roster of characters from an available nine, of which include Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Rabbid Peach, Rabbid Luigi, Rabbid Mario, and others such as newcomer Rabbid Rosalina. Players are also tasked with rescuing the Sparks throughout the galaxy, who provide distinct powers that will help the player in battle.[2] The character Beep-0 once again serves as the guide for the other characters.

Unlike the first game, level designs are less linear, and combat features a new system that disregards the first game's grid-based layout. This new combat has been compared to that of games such as Divinity: Original Sin.[1] [3] Also featured are enemy encounters outside of turn-based combat. Lead designer Xavier Manzanares speaking about the new combat stated: "you can move in this area of movement the way you want, you can dash a Bob-omb, then you have it in your hand. You can move around as you want, but then it's going to explode. So you have a few seconds to react, which is completely different from what we had in the past. And so it brings this real-time element to the mix".[1]

Development [edit]

The game was announced on June 12, 2021 on Nintendo's website, revealing the title, release window of 2022, and various screenshots.[2] Hours later at the E3 2021 Ubisoft Forward event, the game was detailed further with gameplay and a cinematic trailer. Also on that day, Grant Kirkhope announced that he was returning to compose the score for the game.[4]

Creative director David Soliani stated that the development team had viewed the game as a "spiritual sequel" to the first, and "a new take on the tactical genre", in part due to the new combat and the game having expand beyond the scope of the Mushroom Kingdom to focus on a range of galactic locations.[3]
